After 1-1/2 years of living in my green, eco-conscious, intelligent and healthy home, my son is quick to point out daily that we still don’t have a doorbell. Not at the front, not at the back, not at the side entry. There is a pair of wires sticking out of the stucco. But of course there would be…I planned my spa house with doorbells.
My usual answer is “it hasn’t come to me yet”.
To most people, the doorbell shouldn’t be a matter of inspiration, but I’m not most people, in case you hadn’t surmised that yet.
It’s comical to see people’s reaction to finding themselves at the gate with no doorbell. It’s a bit like being on candid camera. Disconcerting to most, amusing to some, the advice always comes out the same: “You should put in a doorbell”.
Whatever happened to KNOCKING at the door? It is always an option.
The cel phone is most useful for most. “ Why,” friends ask, "don’t you have a doorbell?"
It’s my retreat, it’s my kingdom, it’s my serenity. Why do I need a doorbell piercing my quiet? Since I office out of my house and my office is near the entry, I can hear someone at the door before they ever know that I could be there.
Let me cut through the layers of reasons and get to the bottom of it. Either you are expected or you're not. Either you are welcome or you’re not; either you belong here or you don’t. Moreover, if there is nobody home, the doorbell could ring incessantly and the result would remain constant. There is little in between in my mind, so who needs a doorbell?
Truth be known, I know I’ll one day relinquish my Bobby Fisher ways. And when I do, it will probably be a wireless-remote doorbell, for which I can download a Radiohead song or a classical sonata. I’ve not googled one yet, but trust that I can dream up a simple piece of technology for the house and it’s already been invented.
I’m finding out many times we just need to get back to basics to be green. What could be greener for a house that using the good-old knuckles and exert some force to KNOCK at the recycled door? Plus, I'm thinking of getting a dog. That will do the trick for sure.
